Incorporated in 1886 Mason City is located in eastern Custer County, Nebraska. The centennial in 1986 was commemorated with a marker on Main Street and a wind sculpture. The Community Building was created in 1965 and continues to be an important center for the community. The first business to open in Mason City was the People's Bank in 1886. In the 1920's Mason City was at its heyday with a population nearing 500 with two banks, a hospital, a flour mill, a cement plant, an opera house and a black smith.
